This week the babies are between 1.75 and 2.4 inches long and our little beans weigh almost .3 of an ounce, They are probably about the size of a small plum.
By this point in time our little ones should be able to open and close their fists, and are starting to form little buds that will one day pop out as teeth! Our little ones are taking advantage of the huge space they are floating in by pregnancy 11 weeks, by kicking and squirming about. In the next three weeks the babies will go through a tremendous growth spurt, almost doubling in size. At no other time in the baby's life will it undergo as many rapid changes as are occurring during this stage of pregnancy. Hiccupping may be happening now that the diaphragm is forming.
Our little scientists are already starting to explore their bodies, focusing most intently on touching their head, and especially their face and mouth. Their mouth in particular will provide them with hours of entertainment. This happens not only because the baby is gaining coordination, and is therefore able to move a hand on command, but also because their palms have gained sensation and can actually “feel” what it touches. They're also developing their swallow reflex this week. And lastly, baby's smelling and other olfactory senses will begin developing this week, which when combined with the maturing taste buds, will provide the babies with their first experiences of taste and smell.
