My last blood test this morning came in reporting my Beta level at 2,461!!! This is fantastic! My nurse and doctor are very pleased and even joked that maybe there is more than one baby...though high numbers do not always indicate this. We'll know on Monday when we have our first OB Sonogram!
Today will officially mark 5 weeks. Each week I'll post new information about our growing baby with a picture describing how big he is. This week the baby is just less than 1/4 of an inch long and is about the size of a sesame seed. Until now, the embryo has been a mass of cells, but by this point in pregnancy a distinct shape begins to form. The neural tube, which will eventually form into the spinal cord and brain, runs from the top to the bottom of the baby. A bulge in the center of the baby will develop into the baby's heart. At this time, the placenta develops. It is through the placenta and its fingerlike projections, called chorionic villi, that the baby receives nourishment from me!
