Week 8

The babies -- now comparable to the size of a kidney bean (just over 1/2 inch long) -- are constantly moving and shifting. This week the gonads will become either testes or ovaries. Bones and joints this week have many things going on. Elbows appear and the process of ossification (hardening of the bones) begins. Toe rays become present, almost ready for me to count! A close-up view of our tiny little embryos would reveal a more baby-like appearance. You'd see an upper lip forming, the protruding tip of those cute button noses, and tiny (and very thin) eyelids. Up until this point in time the babies each had a small tail... that will start to disappear this week, and our little ones will soon have eyelids to cover their blossoming eyes. While the arms and legs are also lengthening, the fingers and toes are likely to still be webbed. The babies brain is also maturing during week 8, as nerve cells begin to connect with one another, forming the groundwork for communication later in life.
