The appointment went well...I haven't gained any weight (yay!) and the baby's heartbeat is apparently strong. Susan did my fundal height measurement and tells us that I am measuring 6 weeks ahead of schedule. She believes that it is due to having more amniotic fluid rather than me growing a "large" baby. She asked to do an ultrasound (US) for weight but Chris and I expressed hesitancy. We shared that 1) Ultrasounds are commonly known to be incorrect in determining a baby's weight (sometimes as much as + or - a full pound) and 2) I am worried that if I hear he is large it will negatively effect my mental status going into delivery. Susan shared that having a successful natural VBAC was her goal and that she felt that having a ultrasound was one way to assure that. Susan argued that if a doctor believes I am growing a big baby only due to fundal height, than he would push for a c-section. However, if Susan was able to discredit that assumption with information from an US, she'd be more likely to convince doctors of a VBAC. She also notes that there are things they can do to help deliver a baby naturally if they know he will be larger (ex. pushing above pubic bone, positioning during delivery, etc.).
Susan ended up convincing me of the ultrasound and was kind enough to ask the sonographer to not share any weight or fluid information with me. Baby is SUPER cute and is starting to fill out! Susan tells us that we should not anticipate another US since he remains head down and everything else is looking good! All in all, I felt comfortable leaving the appointment and confident that everything is progressing smoothly. Here are some photos of the little guy!
